The Rang Bhavan Bash

Jeremy at Rang Bhavan

Jeremy at Rang Bhavan

Mumbai. Feb 20.

Jazzy lights dissolved in circles and polygons synchronizing with the strong chords of blues guitarist Jeremy Spencer, at Rang Bhavan, on Saturday. And Jeremy’s bag had a song for everyone in the eclectic crowd of teenyboppers and old jazz, blues lovers.

The toast to the evening was his Elvis Presley number—including a clownish anecdote—a Presley act and the inevitable, the song, which set many feet tapping, heads swinging, hands swaying, and the entire lot chipping in to the All Shook Up! bit. Jeremy strummed hard at his guitar, which has come along with him right from the Fifties.

Having earlier performed in India in 1995 and 1998, the proceeds for each concert has gone to the National Association for the Blind. Jeremy admits, “I am no philanthropist. The audiences want it that way, and so I give it to them.”

Sounds of birds chirping were reproduced on the metal plate, a conversation over the phone of a date was translated into a climax on the slopes of the guitar and with Psychic Waste, Spencer exposed concern for a decadent civilization that the urban lot seems trapped in. The concert was amazing.

With two singers in white to accompany him, the short figure joked around on stage with much honesty. When Jeremy dashed off the stage and the evening ended with lyrics based on his travels in India and the orchestra swung into the act with purely Indian sounds and a fusion of sorts was the last take.

Mumbai being the first of four performances, Jeremy Spencer will now spread the good slides to Bangalore and Delhi subsequently. In his third visit to India, he believes a lot has changed, “The pace seems to have increased and the women dress a lot more bolder now.”

The evening was not without the usual bloopers. When model cum VJ Nafisa Joseph yelled aloud on stage, “The cat is out of the mouse (instead of the bag)” a band of college kids hooted shame shame in the regular fashion of Rang Bhavan’s tradition.
